DARIAH-EU

Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities

What is DARIAH?

DARIAH (Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities) is a pan-European research infrastructure whose mission is to empower arts and humanities research communities with digital methods to create, connect, and share knowledge about culture and society.

NoteLegal status

DARIAH was formally established as a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) on 15 August 2014, by European Commission Decision 2014/239/EU. France is the host country of the DARIAH-ERIC secretariat (Paris). As of 2025, DARIAH counts 22 Member States and several cooperating partners. It is listed on the ESFRI Roadmap of strategic European research infrastructures.

DARIAH operates as a distributed network of national nodes, each contributing expertise, content, tools, and services to a shared infrastructure. It is not a single platform but a social and technical ecosystem.

Four Strategic Pillars

Pillar Description
Research Supporting digital methods for arts & humanities research โ€” text analysis, data modelling, digital editions, cultural analytics
Education & Training Building digital skills across the research community โ€” DARIAH Campus, summer schools, workshops
Advocacy Promoting open science and digital humanities in European research policy
Infrastructure Developing and maintaining shared technical resources and interoperable services

  • Text and Data Analytics
  • Digital Methods and Practices Observatory (DiMPO)
  • Ethics and Legality in the Digital Arts and Humanities (ELDAH)
  • DARIAH Teach
  • Women Writers in History
  • Thesaurus Maintenance

Tip

Working groups are an excellent entry point for doctoral students to engage with the European DH community, present early-stage work, and build international networks.

DARIAH and France

France is both a founding DARIAH member and the host country of the DARIAH-ERIC secretariat. The French national node โ€” DARIAH-FR โ€” is managed by Huma-Num. This means:

  • French researchers access DARIAH services primarily through Huma-Num
  • Huma-Num coordinates French participation in DARIAH working groups
  • NAKALA, Isidore, and other Huma-Num services feed into the DARIAH ecosystem

DARIAH and UNITA Countries

Most UNITA partner countries are connected to DARIAH in some capacity:

Country DARIAH status National node / contact

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ญ Switzerland Cooperating partner (DARIAH-CH in progress) SAHSS / EPFL / UniNE
๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Ukraine Cooperating partner Chernivtsi National University

Switzerland is building a DARIAH-CH national consortium under the DESIR programme, with eight partner institutions, in order to apply for full membership. Ukraine participates as a cooperating partner.

Annual Events

DARIAH organises a flagship Annual Event each year, bringing together the global DH community. The 2026 edition takes place in Rome, Italy (26โ€“29 May 2026).
